Marc and I reached Uhuru Peak on Mt. Kilimanjaro at 6 am on World Water Day, and thanks to you, we raised $33,000 for clean water projects in Tanzania!

We left our camp at midnight and hiked through snow and lightning to get to the summit. We actually got to the highest point in Africa an hour earlier than we had anticipated. As you can see from the photo, it was dark and foggy on the summit, but we made it! A special thank you to Maggie Montgomery and Cheryl Stone for making the banner we are holding. All of our donors' names are on the sign, and our guide and good friend, Simbo, now has the banner hanging in his home.

I was hoping to send this update sooner, but my computer crashed in Africa, taking with it all of our photos and some video! Luckily, the information has been recovered from the hard drive, and soon we will have photos from the projects you to show you.

Thank you all again for your support and well wishes! Your generosity was inspiring.

Asante sana! ("Thank you very much!" in Swahili.)

Take care,
Brax

New Song In "You Kill Me"

One of my new songs, "Everybody's Here," is featured in the movie, "You Kill Me," starring Ben Kingsley, Tea Leoni and Luke Wilson. The dark comedy is getting good reviews (Two Thumbs Up!), and if you stick around for the credits, you'll see my name! More new songs are on the way. I'll be recording throughout the summer to release a new CD in this Fall.

Back from Africa

Late last night I got back to Los Angeles after more than a month in Africa. I have so much to tell you about the experience that I don't even know where to start. I was teaching English at a secondary school in Tanzania, in the town of Moshi, at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. In the mornings you could see the mountain from the road in front of my school! The kids were amazing, and it's fair to say that they taught me much more than I taught them.

Tomorrow I'm back on a plane to the East Coast for a gig this Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina. I'll be playing at Oysters On The West End, and we'll be celebrating the wedding of Katherine Schuler and Greg Ericson. Katherine and Greg met at one of my gigs at The Handlebar in Greenville a couple of years ago, and Katherine was kind enough to put up the whole band when we came through Charlotte, NC. She literally moved out of her apartment for a night so that we had a place to stay! The couple get married on Saturday, so come down Friday night and congratulate them early. Tim White, a great singer-songwriter from Greenville, will also perform, and I'm sure we'll play a few tunes together.

Next week, I expect to have a chance to write a little about my experience volunteering in Africa. I plan to post a blog on Myspace and add a few photos to the website.

Next month, my friend Seth Libbey is coming all the way from Mississippi to infiltrate Southern California with his soulful music. We're playing gigs in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. I'm telling you now, Seth is not to be missed! He is an incredible performer. You just don't know what might happen!
Hope you're doing well! Thanks for listening!

Take care,
Brax

Amnesty International Benefit at The Ould Sod

Happy Valentine's Day!

This Sunday, the band will be joining me for the 8th Annual Amnesty International Fundraiser hosted by the Ould Sod in San Diego. This will be my 6th year performing at the event! As always, it's held on the Sunday before Presidents Day, Feb. 19th--so no school the next day... :-) The event starts at 3 pm, and we'll go on at 7:30 pm and play one set. Then we get to hang out and listen to the other great bands playing that night—including Gregory Page, Berkley Hart, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Saba and Sara Petite (who is joining me on a Tour of Ireland in May). It's a great event and a great cause--I hope to see you there. For more info on Amensty International, please visit www.amnesty.org.

We’re gearing up to record a new album, so new tunes are starting to appear in our sets, including “The Seasons” and “Way To The Waterfall.” Hopefully we’ll have a new record by the end of the summer.

Even before that, you will see the debut release from Mike Bedard. If you’ve seen Mike play drums with me and the band, you know what an amazing drummer he is. He’s also an incredible singer, songwriter and guitarist. Basic tracks have been laid down for his EP, which will be released later this year on eVocal Records.

I hope your day is full of love!

Take care,
Brax

CD Baby Compilation

Thanks so much to everyone who bought Brax’s new CD, The Length of the Day, at CD Baby. The CD ended up at #16 in sales for the last week of February and #30 for the month! Because of you, CD Baby will include one of our songs on a compilation that will be distributed throughout the country in 2005!
