Brax Cutchin is almost there. He has just
completed The Length of the Day, an 11-song
CD that showcases his strong songwriting, distinct vocals
and immensely talented band.
The music has been described as U2 meets Wilco,
and Brax's voice sounds kind of like a blend of Johnny Cash
and David Bowie. The songs are passionate and literate and
are performed with heart and abandon.
The Length of the Day was released in December
2003 and follows the 5-song EP, March, which Brax recorded
after relocating to Los Angeles from San Diego in 2001. Brax
released his first full-length CD, Thru,
in 1999.
After a gig in Austin, Texas during the South By
Southwest festival, Brax will play two shows in Southern
California in March, and then begin the Somewhere
America Tour 2004 with a run of shows in Georgia,
South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee in April. A second
leg of the tour is scheduled for July to include a four-week
jaunt from Maine to Georgia and then back to California along
the southern route through Texas.
The musicianship of the band is top-notch, starting with
the foundation: drummer Mike Bedard, who
also sings excellent backing vocals and has played with Brax
for five years. Bassist Steve Whalen anchors
the band with his warm and solid groove while guitarist Fren
Asken uses rich tones to create buoyant textures
that complement Brax’s rhythm guitar.
For the last week of February 2004, The Length of the
Day was #16 in sales at CD Baby and
was #30 for the entire month. Although promotion to radio
has not yet begun, tracks from the album have already received
spins on radio stations in San Diego, Austin and Amherst,
Massachusetts. Recently, a British film student featured
Almost There in his thesis short film.
Brax recently received an Honorable Mention in the 2003 Billboard Songwriting Contest for Disciple, a song from Thru, and Almost There was selected as a semi-finalist for the RPM Direct Unsigned Vol. 3 Compilation.
Brax also received nominations for two San Diego Music Awards in 2000: "Best Rock" and "Best Pop Album" for Thru. The band was also nominated for "Best Rock Band" in the 2000 San Diego Reader Best of San Diego poll.
